Garbage often piles up causing odors and attracting insects into your home. They’re also pretty ugly. As for the bags, they’re not much better. They never fit properly and constantly fall in on themselves. They leak, they tear, and they can’t handle any significant weight if they’re not doubled up. Worst of all, plastic bags are a detriment to our environment, polluting our oceans and filling landfills by the millions.

Canbi's latex liners aren't just environmentally friendly, they're also specially configured to make them super simple to use. We've developed Canbi's liners to nest together in sets of 25 layers. This means that once you install a set, you won't have to change the bag for months at a time.

The big issue we wanted to tackle was the reliance on single use plastic bags. We hate those. Plastic bags are a big problem today, with 500 million to 1 trillion being used worldwide every year. They're made out of fossil fuels and take hundreds of years to break down. Most bags end up in landfills and get covered by other waste, limiting the necessary UV exposure they need to decompose. Even after they finally break down, they can leave harmful toxins and chemical off-gases behind causing long term environmental duress. 

We wanted to eliminate plastic bags and create a better alternative to what was currently available. Our first consideration was paper. Paper bags are much better than plastic, but they're not super practical for garbage can liners. They're prone to tearing and liquids can easily limit their structural integrity. Our next consideration was bio-plastic. While bio-plastic bags are a step in the right direction, they too have many issues that make them a less than perfect solution. They often require specific conditions in order to fully break down, and most will never be properly recycled. Most will end up back in landfills where they're almost as bad as regular plastic bags.

We found our solution in the natural compound of the Hevea Brasiliensis tree. Natural latex is a miracle material and is already widely used in a variety of products and applications. Pure natural latex is fully biodegradable and takes the same amount of time to break down as an oak leaf, approximately 4 years in normal conditions. That's quite a big jump from 500+ year decomposition rate for plastics. Our original blend includes natural latex, organic compound fillers, starch-based polymers and waste latex from other industrial uses, such as balloon and condom manufacturing. We are able to use this blend to create a strong and flexible liner material that resists leaks and tears, and breaks down quickly and efficiently even under a broad range of environmental settings. With this formula we are also able to further decrease the break down time of our liners. Utilizing latex encourages the replanting of our rain forests, and helps to keep single use plastic bags out of our oceans and landfills.  

Latex allergy is another concern we've dealt with. We are developing our liner manufacturing process to remove the protein that causes allergic reactions in a small portion of people. We use a curing bath to leach out this protein and higher vulcanization temperatures to ensure it's elimination. We hope to have fully hypoallergenic liners by the time we are ready to ship. We will also be fully transparent with what materials we are using, and Canbi liners will have labels stating that they contain latex.

Canbi is an important step in the evolution of waste management. It's setting the new standard of what we as a society view as acceptable for our environment. It's changing the way we use our planets resources. Canbi is putting a stronger emphasis on long term solutions that have a positive impact on our global health.
